Professional Skin Care
If clients want treatments that refresh and revive their skin, consider adding microdermabrasion to your service menu. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive manual exfoliation that carries much less risk than laser resurfacing or chemical peels, and recovery is quicker. Read on to learn the benefits of microdermabrasion and why it could be a good fit for your spa.

What Is Microdermabrasion?
The skin has two main layers: the dermis (inner) and the epidermis (outer). Many common concerns—wrinkles, dark spots, and dull texture—sit in the outer layer. Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates that layer to reduce these issues and brighten the complexion.
There are two main methods: crystal and diamond microdermabrasion. In crystal microdermabrasion, tiny crystals are sprayed onto the skin to remove dead cells and then vacuumed away. Diamond microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped wand to abrade the skin while a suction system lifts away the debris.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes treatment times are about 20 minutes for the neck and 30–40 minutes for the face; body treatments vary. Microdermabrasion is often done in a series of about six sessions, spaced two to three weeks apart.
Both methods can leave skin smoother, reduce acne scarring, and soften fine lines. Below are the main benefits.
Benefits Of Microdermabrasion
This quick, painless resurfacing treatment removes dead skin cells, boosts circulation, and can stimulate collagen production. Better blood flow brings more oxygen to the skin, helping it look fresher and more youthful. The treatment can fade dark spots, fine lines, and acne scars, with effects often lasting around a month—results vary by age and individual skin response.
Because it’s non-invasive, there’s no downtime, and it’s generally safe for both face and body.
Microdermabrasion can help clients with:
– Dark spots
– Melasma
– Scars
– Uneven texture
– Dull complexion
– Fine lines
– Stretch marks
Who Should Not Get This Treatment?
Do not perform microdermabrasion on irritated skin, active acne, or open breakouts. Avoid it for clients who have recently had invasive procedures or cosmetic injectables.
How Much Should You Charge For Microdermabrasion?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost is about $167 per session. Pricing should reflect the provider’s training and experience and the specific type of microdermabrasion used.
What Is The Process Of A Microdermabrasion Treatment?
Step 1: Consultation
Begin with a consultation to review the client’s skin concerns, past treatments, and current products.
Step 2: Cleaning
Treatments must be done on clean skin. Even if a client says they’ve washed, cleanse their face on arrival to remove any makeup or buildup.
Step 3: Eye Protection
Provide eye protection, such as sunglasses, to shield the client from bright lights during the procedure.
Step 4: Perform The Treatment
Use the handheld device to remove the top layer of skin and clear away dead cells. Work methodically over the face, neck, or other treated areas to improve overall skin appearance.
Step 5: Moisturize
After treatment the skin may look red or feel sunburned. Apply a calming moisturizer suited to the client’s skin type to soothe and protect the area.
Aftercare Instructions For Clients
