Get to Know the Artist Behind the 5 Million Trees Video

Sustainability

After planting 5 million trees, you want to share that news in a meaningful way. Through our Buy a Product, Plant a Tree program, we hit that milestone and wanted a video that felt as beautiful and handmade as our products.

Get to Know the Artist Behind the 5 Million Trees Video

We asked Riki K, a talented multimedia artist in Baltimore, to bring the story to life. Riki mixes traditional illustration with digital animation to create the film. The video follows Flora, a friend of Eminence, who carries a magical box of products from her spa into the wider world. As she bikes past barren land, eroded soil, and deforested areas, the box leaves behind miraculous leaves that bloom into flowers and grow trees, turning devastation into hope.

A short interview with Riki K and more about her work:

Tell us about yourself
I offer interdisciplinary multimedia creative services for clients and collaborators. My varied education and experience let me combine traditional art and design with newer tech—my main focus is lights and projections. I’ve designed stage projections, built brand stories with motion graphics, and recently created a multimedia installation for Light City Baltimore 2016.

Over the past 20 years I’ve lived in Seoul, Tokyo, LA, San Francisco, Washington, DC, London, and Milan. I’m currently based in Baltimore—partly because I now own two thoroughbred horses. I speak three languages fluently and can get by in two more. I’ve been lucky to travel a lot in the last 15 years, and all of that informs my sense of design.

What was your process for creating the video?
I started with rough pen thumbnails on scraps of paper after talking with the great Eminence team. Once we settled on the right compositions, I redrew each scene by hand, used a lightbox to prepare them, then converted those drawings to digital files for animation.

What was your inspiration?
Most of the idea came to me on the road to the barn where my horses live. That route—full of trees, farms, hills, and open nature—was the perfect source of inspiration.

What inspires you about Eminence Organics planting 5 million trees?
I spend a lot of time in nature with my horses, so I appreciate efforts to protect it. Thanks to Eminence Organics, a bit more of that natural beauty will be preserved for future generations.
