March 8 is International Women’s Day, and we’re celebrating how every Eminence product helps empower women in Senegal. Since 2012, we’ve planted a tree for every product through our Forests For The Future™ program with Trees For The Future. These trees grow in Forest Garden Projects in Senegal—small food forests that yield fruit, vegetables, fuelwood, and fodder for animals. Planted close to homes, these gardens have changed the lives of the families involved, especially the women.

Here are 4 ways Forest Garden Projects empower women:
1. Provide food
Because feeding the family often falls to women in many African communities, Forest Garden Projects that produce diverse food reduce reliance on single-crop farming and on foraging, making it easier for women to feed their families.
2. Produce fuelwood
Women traditionally gather fuelwood daily. With a Forest Garden nearby, they no longer have to walk long distances—sometimes in unsafe conditions—to collect wood.
3. Give girls more chance to attend school
When chores like finding food and wood take less time, girls have more opportunity to go to school and focus on their studies.
4. Generate income
Monocrop fields like maize and peanuts are often grown by men, while the plants, trees, and fruit from Forest Garden Projects are usually grown and managed by women. Selling this produce brings extra income to women, increasing their financial control and independence.
On International Women’s Day, we celebrate how Forest Garden Projects empower women. You can support Forests For The Future™ with every Eminence product you buy—learn more about Forests For The Future™ here.
