Three Ways Nature Boosts Your Health (and Your Skin!)

Lifestyle & Wellness

July is National Park & Recreation Month. For a healthier, happier you, take time this summer to visit your local parks, beaches, and public gardens.

Three Ways Nature Boosts Your Health (and Your Skin!)

Why spend more time in nature? Numerous studies over the past 30 years have linked time outdoors with better health and well‑being (Science Daily). That’s one good reason—here are three more:

1. Nature Reduces Stress (and Helps Your Skin)
Time in nature not only lifts your mood but also helps your body physically by lowering blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and stress hormones (University of Minnesota). Less stress also means healthier skin: stress-related hormonal changes can trigger issues like acne, psoriasis, hives, itching, and thinning skin (AskWomen.net). In short, being calmer often means clearer skin.

2. Time Outside Boosts Your Immune System
A study from Tokyo’s Nippon Medical School found that women who spent six hours in a forest over two days showed increases in virus- and tumor-fighting white blood cells (Health.com). You’ll also get vitamin D from sunlight and breathe cleaner air among trees. Quick fact: one tree can produce about 260 pounds of oxygen a year. 3. A Walk in the Park Sharpens Your Focus
Being in nature gives your brain a break from constant stimulation, which can restore your attention and reduce mental fatigue (Psychological Science). Even a short walk can improve focus and lessen tiredness (Best Health). So instead of eating lunch at your desk, try a stroll in the park—and unplug from tech (no texting while you walk!).

Whether it’s a hike in the woods or a picnic at your neighborhood park, there are lots of ways to enjoy nature’s health benefits. How do you bring nature into your daily life? Tell us in the comments below.
