Top Spa and Wellness Trends for 2020

Lifestyle & Wellness
As we move through a year of major changes, we’re looking ahead to the spa and wellness trends shaping the skin-care world. With so much shifting because of COVID-19, we turned to our in-house spa expert, Jessica Timberlake, for her perspective. As PR Manager at Eminence Organics and an Executive Committee member of the International Spa Association (ISPA), Jessica keeps a close eye on industry developments. We spoke with her about how COVID-19 has influenced our predictions and to hear her updated forecast for 2020. Read on for her report:

Spa Trends

Top Spa and Wellness Trends for 2020

New: Simplified Treatment Menus
After global closures, many spas are reopening with shorter, simpler menus. Expect quick options like “flash facials” — professional facials in 30 minutes or less — and even touchless services such as guided meditation.

Waterless Treatments
Eco-minded spas are finding ways to cut water use. The EPA notes standard shower heads use about 2.5 gallons per minute, so waterless treatment protocols — even for body services — help reduce consumption. Our Stone Crop Body Collection was created with this idea in mind, enabling spas to offer waterless body treatments.
COVID-19 update: Many spas are rethinking water-based amenities like showers, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms. Waterless body treatments offer a safer, more comfortable option.

Personalization
Spas are moving away from one-size-fits-all service standards and toward tailoring each visit to the individual. That can mean treatment rooms with Bluetooth so you can pick your own music, or estheticians who customize your home-care routine to the number of steps you prefer.
COVID-19 update: Personalization will become central to all spa experiences. Treatments will be adapted for health and safety, and spas may offer extra protective options to match your comfort level — for example, honoring your request for a therapist to wear gloves during a massage.

Skin Care Ingredient Forecast

New: Adaptogens
Adaptogens are gaining mainstream attention for skin care. Ingredients like reishi mushroom respond to what your skin needs, adding targeted benefits and enhancing your routine.

Biodynamic®
Clean beauty is now widely accepted, and Biodynamic® ingredients — grown in harmony with seasons and natural rhythms — are becoming more common. We’ve prioritized these ingredients for years. Look for the Demeter International seal to confirm Biodynamic® certification.

Crystals & Gemstones
Crystals and gemstones have moved into wellness culture — on water bottles, in fashion, on yoga mats, and even pet collars. Many people believe these stones transmit energy vibrations that help balance the body’s natural rhythms. Whether it’s crystal-infused water, gemstone-based skin care, or simply a rose quartz on your desk, you’ll see crystals and gemstones more in beauty and wellness.

New: Oils & Humectants
Frequent use of hand sanitizers and wipes has left many people’s hands dry. Expect more products with humectants — ingredients that pull moisture from the air to hydrate skin — along with nourishing oils that lock in moisture and form a protective barrier.

Wellness Trends

New: Skin Care Products + Wellbeing
Wellness is becoming part of daily life for many people. Beyond yoga and meditation, consumers now look for wellness in every routine. Spa guests will expect skin-care products to contribute to their overall wellbeing — helping to calm the mind, body and spirit as well as improve the skin.

Happiness
Happiness is a big topic across the spa industry. Finding joy in yourself, your work and your relationships came up repeatedly at the Women in Wellness Summit. Small daily happiness practices can spread positivity: a cheerful esthetician can lift a client’s mood, who then brings that cheer back to family and friends.
Try this quick boost: take three minutes to write down three specific things you’re grateful for — not just “flowers,” but “the violets that bloomed on my kitchen windowsill.” Then invite someone nearby to do the same.

Individuality
Wellness is a personal practice. Some people find peace running, others through yoga, cooking, painting, or quiet meditation. If a certain activity makes you anxious, choose what feels right for you instead. Make 2020 the year to prioritize your own needs — and know the spa and wellness world is ready with more ways to relax than ever.
COVID-19 update: Spas are places of care and healing, and returning guests may have a range of emotions. Tell your esthetician or service provider how you’re feeling so they can adjust the service to support your mental wellbeing as well as your physical needs.
